UTSA Grad Explores Mental Landscapes
Artist trusted her gut when creating expressive works in Bismarck Studios Contemporary Art Gallery show.
By Steve Bennett
In the spring of 2010, as she put the finishing touches on her art degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Daniela Sacramento Cardenas immersed herself in “Esencias,” a series of figurative portraits of people in her life that nonetheless reflected “not so much their physical aspects as their essences.”
The 24-year-old Matamoros native’s art has continued to evolve dramatically over the past year and a half — “A moment in my life of a lot of change,” she says — and those shifts of personal seismology are registered in a new series of mental landscapes fittingly called “Transición(Transition).”
“These are self-portraits,” Sacramento says, breaking into a smile. “This series is selfishly all about me.”
