About the Artist:
John Dyer is a professional photographer, with over 30 years experience, based in San Antonio. Early influenced by the work of Russell Lee and Garry Winogrand, he has spent his career documenting the people and culture of San Antonio, South Texas and his native Montana. He has produced photographs for, among others, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Elle, Fortune, Business, Money, Texas Monthly, Mas, LA Magazine and Travel & Leisure. He shoots annual reports for many of the Fortune 500 companies and works for many national advertising agencies. John’s work has been selected for publication in American Photography, Print Magazine (Certificate of Design Excellence), Communications Arts Photography Annual, Graphis Photo, Flash Magazine (Creative Excellence Award) and HOW Magazine (Self-Promotion Award).
John is the author of three books: Conjunto (University of Texas Press, October, 2005) is a celebration in environmental portraits of an indigenous roots music specific to South Texas. 65 large photographs taken from this book were exhibited as the inaugural exhibit at the Museo Alameda in San Antonio, the first Smithsonian Institution affiliate outside of Washington, DC. El Vaquero Real, The Original American Cowboy (Bright Sky Press, September, 2007), co-authored with Lionel Sosa, tells the story of the Texas Vaquero, his lifestyle, history and culture. Photographs from this book have been widely exhibited throughout Texas. And, San Antonio Hidden Treasures (2011), a commission by HEB.
John’s film/video work includes branding/imaging work for The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, the Baptist University of the Americas, Sul Ross State University and the short documentaries, The Stuccoist, Lerma’s and Joe Souza. In the spring of 2011, John was Director of Photography for the feature film, The Miracle Weaver.
